THE FORMATTER
Our free Markdown table formatter turns messy Markdown tables into clean, consistently aligned code. Paste a Markdown table, click Format Table, and instantly get readable Markdown with neatly aligned pipe characters and normalized cell spacing.
The formatter preserves GitHub Flavored Markdown column alignment and works directly in your browser. Copy the result back into a README, documentation page, or Markdown editor.
THREE SHORT STEPS
Paste, format, and copy. No installation needed.
Paste a Markdown table—or upload a Markdown document containing one or more tables.
Click Format Table to align pipe characters, normalize spacing, and keep left, center, or right alignment markers.
Copy the result back into a README, documentation page, issue, or Markdown editor. Download .md when you need a file.
MARKDOWN TABLE FORMATTING
Three ways to clean up your Markdown tables. Load any example into the tool, then click Format Table to see the same result live.
Tables copied from chats or edited by hand often have uneven spacing. They may display correctly on GitHub but be hard to read while editing.
Formatting lines up the columns and cleans up spacing. Your table’s contents stay the same.
Choose Pretty for neatly aligned columns, or Compact for less spacing.

| Bob | Designer |GitHub Flavored Markdown controls rendered alignment only in the separator row. `:---` is left, `:---:` is center, and `---:` is right. A bare `---` is treated as left.
Lining up columns in the Markdown text is different from aligning the contents of the displayed table. Formatting makes the text easier to read; Preserve alignment keeps each column’s left, center, or right alignment.
Turn Preserve alignment off to left-align every column.

Links, inline code, and escaped pipes (`\|`) stay as written while the surrounding table spacing is cleaned up.
Load the example, click Format Table, then open Preview to confirm the rendered table still shows code, the link, and a single pipe in the last row.

CREATE OR CLEAN
Same Markdown tables, two different jobs. Pick the tool that matches how your table starts.
You already have a Markdown table with messy spacing or uneven columns. Paste it here, format, and copy the result. You can also format several tables in a full document at once.
You are building a table from scratch or from spreadsheet data. Open the Markdown Table Generator for a visual grid, Excel/CSV paste, per-column alignment controls, and live Markdown output.
Generate or import data in the generator, copy the Markdown, then run it through the formatter when you want neatly aligned Markdown. Or format first, then import the result into the generator if you still need to edit cells.
GITHUB
What GitHub requires, what this tool changes, and what it leaves alone.
GitHub Flavored Markdown pipe tables need a header row and a separator row before any data rows. Add both rows before formatting so your table can be recognized. You can leave the header cells empty if you don’t want visible column headings.
Rendered alignment comes only from colons on the separator: :--- left, :---: center, ---: right. Source alignment is separate: padding spaces so pipes line up while you edit. Formatting improves the source for README files, issues, and pull requests; with Preserve alignment on, GitHub should still render the table the same way.
Pretty output aligns columns for reading and review. Compact keeps the same table with less spacing. Paste a whole Markdown document if you like: every valid pipe table is reformatted in place, and surrounding headings or paragraphs are left untouched. Tables inside fenced code blocks are ignored so examples in docs stay literal.
If one row has more cells than the header, the tool pads missing cells and warns you instead of dropping values. Merged cells aren’t supported in GitHub Markdown tables.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Paste your existing Markdown pipe table into the input, click Format Table, then copy the cleaned result. The tool aligns columns, normalizes spacing, and keeps GitHub Flavored Markdown alignment markers.
Yes. This Markdown table formatter is free to use in your browser. There is no signup, and your table is not uploaded to a server.
Source alignment (neat pipes) is handled automatically when you format. Content alignment uses the separator row: :--- for left, :---: for center, and ---: for right. Turn on Preserve alignment to keep those markers.
Formatting makes the Markdown text easier to read by lining up columns and cleaning up spacing. Column alignment controls whether the displayed contents sit on the left, in the center, or on the right. This tool formats the text and keeps your existing column alignment by default.
Yes. Left, center, and right markers are preserved by default so tables still render the same way on GitHub, in README files, issues, and pull requests.
Yes. Formatting does not delete cells or reinterpret links, code, or escaped pipes. If a row has a different column count, empty cells are added and you get a warning—values are not silently dropped. Tables larger than 200 columns or 5,000 rows are truncated with an on-screen warning so oversized input cannot fail silently.
A formatter cleans a table you already have. A generator helps you build a new table from a visual grid, Excel paste, or CSV. Use the Markdown Table Generator when you need to create a table from scratch.
Standard GitHub Flavored Markdown pipe tables require a header row and a separator row. You can leave header cells empty for a blank-looking first row, but GFM does not define a true headerless table.
No. Standard GFM pipe tables do not support merged cells. Keep each value in its own cell.
